MARCH EIK MONTHLY REFRESHER TRAINING

TOPIC: Navigating Kenya’s 2026 Flood Crisis: Expert Insights on Flood Management

Kenya is currently facing one of its most severe flood emergencies in recent history, with heavy rains since early March 2026 causing rivers to breach their banks and inundate communities across the country. The crisis has resulted in at least 88 confirmed fatalities, displaced over 34,000 people in more than 21 counties, and caused extensive damage to infrastructure, farmland, and homes as rivers overflowed. These events underscore critical gaps in our flood preparedness systems and raise urgent questions about both physical flood management structures and the policy and planning frameworks guiding them.

The Environment Institute of Kenya invites environmental professionals, policymakers, planners, and practitioners to join our monthly refresher training session focused on strengthening Kenya’s response to the 2026 flood crisis. This virtual session will delve into key challenges, practical mitigation strategies, and opportunities to elevate the role of environmental expertise in national flood resilience.

In this session, we will explore:

  1. Hardware and Software Deficiencies in Flood Management

  2. Effective Responses and Mitigation Strategies

  3. Repositioning Environmentalists in Flood Management
